UNM Meal Plan Policies

Policies for academic year 2019-2020

Student agrees that the Meal Plan Selection Form, together with these Terms and Conditions, shall constitute the Meal Plan Contract and are intended to be a binding legal agreement. The Regents of the University of New Mexico and Student agree as follows:

1. Mandatory Participation

Student acknowledges and agrees that execution of a Meal Plan Contract is a required condition for first year college experience freshmen living in UNM Housing or Casas Del Rio. In the event that the LoboCard Office does not receive a signed Meal Plan Contract from Student, Student authorizes and instructs the LoboCard Office to enroll Student in a Lobo Meal Plan and hereby unconditionally agrees to pay all fees and charges associated with such meal plan. First year college experience freshmen transferring to Lobo Village during the academic year will not be released from the mandatory meal plan. Transfer and/or CNM Gateway students are considered first year college experience freshmen living in UNM Housing or Casas Del Rio if graduation date is within 10 months or are in their second semester of freshmen year.

Note: Student is still considered a “First Year College Experience Freshmen” regardless of the number of credit hours that may academically classify them as a sophomore or higher. For any questions regarding the Meal Plan options, please contact Chartwells at 277-1362 or mealplans@unm.edu.

2. Resident Student Meal Plan Selection

Upperclassmen living in UNM Housing or Casas Del Rio may select any meal plan option and provide all other required information, through the web interface.   If Student is required to attend New Student Orientation or College Enrichment Program and lives in UNM Housing or Casas Del Rio, Student must select either the Lobo Meal Plan plan, the Silver Meal plan, or the Cherry Meal plan, with the Lobo Meal Plan being the minimum. If Student is not required to attend New Student Orientation or College Enrichment Program, Student may select any meal plan option.  For any questions regarding Meal Plan options, please contact a meal plan representative at 277-1362 or mealplans@unm.edu.

3. Voluntary Meal Plan Selection

Upperclassmen living on campus and non-resident Student may choose any available meal plan option.  Community Meal Plans will be valid for one semester only.  Students are considered voluntary Meal Plan holders if student is a non-resident, an upperclassmen living in Housing, Transfer/Non-Traditional Upperclassmen, students who do not enroll right after high school such as Military, Mission assignment (Religion) or their graduation date is after 12 months.

4. Change Period

If Student begins occupancy in the residence hall during the Fall semester, Student may change the meal plan selection at any time during the first three weeks of the Fall semester by delivering notice to the LoboCard Office. If Student begins occupancy in the residence hall during the Spring semester, Student may change the meal plan selection at any time during the first two weeks of the Spring semester by delivering notice to the LoboCard Office. First Year experience freshmen may only upgrade their meal plan from Lobo to Silver or Cherry. No fee will apply if the students decides to upgrade their meal plan. After the change period, any subsequent changes that lower the plan selection will be assessed a $100 fee (Lobo Card Office).

5. Term

For first college experience freshmen, if Student begins occupancy in the residence hall during the Fall semester, this agreement shall be for a term of one academic year. If Student begins occupancy during the Spring semester, this agreement shall be for one semester.

6. Payment

If Student begins occupancy during the Fall semester, Student shall pay sums due under this contract in full or in installments in accordance with the policies and procedures outlined by the Bursar’s Office. If Student begins occupancy during the Spring semester, Student shall pay all sums due under this contract in accordance with the policies and procedures outlined by the Bursar’s Office. Remaining meal plan values carry over from Fall semester to Spring semester for required first year experience residents who continue with residency and/or the purchase of a Spring semester meal plan.  Remaining meal plan values carry over from Fall semester to Spring semester for voluntary meal plan purchases, if a meal plan is purchased for the Spring semester.  For any student who purchased a voluntary community plan, all meal plan values will carry over from Fall semester to Spring semester.  Unused meal plan values will be removed from all plans on the Monday following finals week of spring semester.

7. Meal Service

Meal service will commence the day the residence hall opens for occupancy and will end with lunch on the last day of the semester. Limited or no meal service will occur during University recesses, between semesters and over holidays. Hours of operation for University breaks and holidays may be found at food.unm.edu.

8. Termination by Student

In the event that Student terminates the student housing contract, Student may also terminate this agreement by informing the LoboCard Office and completion of the meal plan cancellation form. Upon termination of a student housing contract and this meal plan contract student will be charged a prorated weekly rate plus actual used dining points. A $100 cancelation fee will apply to students who cancel after the first three weeks of Fall Semester and first two weeks of the spring semester.   All student meal plan cancelation exception requests will be directed to the Food Service department. Exceptions will be made on a case by case basis. If permission is granted to cancel the meal plan, student will be charged a prorated weekly rate plus actual dining point’s usage and applicable cancellation fee. For Dietary cancelations, Student will be directed to the La Posada Chef to accommodate their dietary needs.  If their dietary needs cannot be met, student will be directed to the Accessibility Resource Center.

9. Adjustments

The LoboCard Office will use its reasonable best efforts to process adjustments caused by termination of this agreement or modification of a meal plan with the Bursar’s Office within five business days.

10. Not assignable

This agreement may not be assigned by the Student and any attempted assignment shall be void. A card swipe is required to access any meal plan. Keyboard entry of any identification number is prohibited.
